Emcee 101: Support vs Obligated Praise

Emcee 101: Support vs Obligated Praise

by Qwestions @ iamqwestions.com

I have been making music for a long time now and it took me a long time to really pin point who supported me. Sometimes your friends and family can love you so much that they praise your “talents” just to make you happy. I personally find that to be bullshit. How can I further myself at anything if everybody tells me what they THINK I want to hear?  I wasn’t a baby when all this began…I encourage criticism it helps me get better at my craft and it helps me make music my audience will appreciate more.

Peer to Peer :The Key to Getting Ya Flow Right

Peer to Peer :The Key to Getting Ya Flow Right

by Sacred Verse

Aight, I’ve noticed on the alot of cats have trouble with they flow, they got potent ideas but they come across weak because of lack of what I call flowetry. I also noticed a post asking how to rap on a track without using multiz. My advice: Don’t.

The key to getting ya flow right is having a vast pool of knowledge to draw from. While you end up switching up topics, it allows you to switch off a dying line and start from fresh. To do this, I cannot stress enough the following lesson:

Absorb everything everyday. I read the daily paper, I read vast genres of books, from mystery to fantasy. I listen to all types of music, regardless of taste (though I must admit my girlfriend helps with this) and I look around at everything about me. If you have time and your writing a drop you really want to come across impressive, use a thesaurus. Swapping words will force you to expand ya rhyme choices and will ultimately make you a better artist.

Now that you know how, its time to put it into action. This is a trick I learned from Pac (not personally), but I give credit where its due. Whenever you got free time, freestyle. Just go on and on, don’t stop, even if it sounds like jibberish don’t let ya rhyme die until you can’t go on no more. I mean even if you start repeating an adlib, let it go and flow over it, try to recapture it and fix it right.

Try and incorporate things about you. For example, I was chillin wit my peeps last night, enjoying my 21st, and they asked me to bust a flow. So Dub starts beatboxin, I catch a little stagefright, take a swill of JD and start rippin him a new one. I started at his f@ggot ass Soulja Shades and left off wit his mismatched strings in his janked ass chucks. I kept it going for about 3 minutes straight, stuttered a few and flipped it to sound like I was mocking him. In all actuality it was a weak verse, but when you flow right, to a crowd it don’t matter.

Flow is an important part of rap, its what differentiates rappers from poets. Look at 50, his verses are basic as f^ck, but he get’s his checks cuz he knows how to rap and wrap them, prepare em for the masses.

ATTN: The Art of Emceeing

Let’s break down the art of emceeing

I notice some people tend to judge rappers by everything else but rapping. For example swag tends to be a criteria used as a basis for a good emcee, longevity is another one, then there’s the almighty record sales measurement.Maybe it’s just me but none of those things have much to do with the physical act of rapping (well ok maybe swag, but only a little). Hey im NOT an emcee but from what I understand rap is composed of the following:

Voice (the quality or sound of an emcees vocals)

Lyrics (the ability to write listenable and interesting subject matter and the quality of rhymes)

Flow (the aspect of speaking rhymes in a particular cadence or manner)

Styles (this could arguably be equated to flow, but I would define as different ways of delivering rhymes whether it be speed, cadence, writing style, etc..)

Presence (the hard to define quality which makes a rapper more than just another faceless emcee. the ability to engage the crowd beyond the typical emcee)

Swagger (this is more of a newer  thing in my opinion. But since some people put a lot of significance on it. I guess it’s the quality of confidence present in an emcee’s lyrics or style)

I might be missing a couple of points but im not an emcee. I think overall those are the elements that every good rapper should have. Of course there are some emcees who might not have all of those elements in their inventory but they are still considered great because of how well they do in the other categories. So here’s the real question if you agree with those elements listed above, where does your favorite rapper fall into the mix? If Emcees are only high on the swagger element and low on everything else can they be considered the Greatest of all time ? What if  your favorite emcee has longevity and but can’t write well and has practically no flow are they  the Greatest of All Time? What if the emcee can find connection with his fans but doesn’t have the sales does that make him the greatest of all time.Whats the criteria of emceeing and rapping for you ? Dont get me wrong world, I love hiphop but it annoys me to no end when I see discussions about obviously sub par rappers being touted as the greatest of all time.

I ask you Emcees,  TELL ME WHAT MAKES  GREAT EMCEE ?

I know what I love about my favorite emcees, What makes them great to me !

but…WHAT MAKES A GREAT EMCEE  THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME TO YOU!

Difference Between Album(LP), EPs & Mixtapes

by Qwestions from IamQwestions.com

Here to Talk about the Difference Between Album(LP), EPs & Mixtapes. After finishing up my project theres been a lot “Qwestions” surrounding my project ”As Of Write Now” and What This Release Is, This Release
Is A “Mixtape.”

A Mixtape Is A Collection Of Songs Which Can Be
Original Songs, Remixes, Freestyles, Or Unreleased Songs.
Used Entirely For Promotional Use To Build A Buzz Around An
Artist For Overall Exposure Or To Hold Over An Audience Before
An Official Release.

An EP is a small collection of Completely Original Material. Normally This Contains The Single From An Upcoming Album And Other Selections From The Same Album. Since The Number Of Songs On An Ep Is Typically No Longer Than 7-8, The Body Of Work Cannot Be Considered An Album.

An Album or LP Is A Full Length Body Of Work. Longer Than An EP More Thought Out And Put Together Than A Mixtape. This Is What You Normally Spend Your Money On If You Buy Albums Anymore Lol.

As Of Write Now” Is a MIXTAPE Not My Album…Not An EP….
It’s A Mixtape…The EP and Album Will Come Later This Year…
Patience My Padawans…Patience…

AS OF WRITE NOW” is out now
